Washington D.C. in video

You probably know by now that one of my goals for 2016 is to take 12 trips. Twelve! It sounds like so many, especially considering that I have a full-time job and a relatively tiny income for New York City. But I am determined to make it happen, and especially to show that it is possible to travel even if you have time and financial restrictions.

Last weekend, I got a jump start on my 12 trips by taking the Megabus down to Washington D.C. I am fortunate to have long weekends built into my work schedule – two every month! – and I try to take advantage of these by taking vacations without using any paid time off. I was able to leave New York early Friday morning and get back Monday afternoon, just in time to be in the office by 5 p.m. Altogether, the travel portion (transportation and accommodation) cost me $26 – because I am also fortunate that my good friend Courtney lives in the District! Traveling to visit friends and crashing on their couches is my favorite way to save money (and I also love hosting my friends in Brooklyn!)

It was my first-ever trip to D.C. and we struck the perfect balance of sightseeing (my only request was a visit to the Newseum, which happened), and catching up. Here’s a little glimpse into the excitement!

Thanks for a great weekend, Courtney! Stay tuned for photos, stories, and a delightful guide to Washington D.C.

2016, let’s do this

I’ve never been so excited for a new year and so uncertain about what it holds at the same time. Last year taught me that even if you’re expecting a year of peace, God could throw a wrench called Africa right into the middle of it. And the year before that taught me that sometimes you do know the big things that lie ahead – but the downfall is that you can rush too hard to close your current chapter. So this year, I don’t know quite what I’m in for – and for the first time, I’m rather all right with that.

Still, I’m a person who likes to have goals (not resolutions), and so here’s what I’m hoping to accomplish in 2016 – with the complete understanding that plans could change and render some of these impossible. That’s the fun!

#Take12Trips

“Every traveler has a home of his own and he learns to appreciate it the more from his wandering.” – Charles Dickens

I was completely shocked when putting together my 2015 roundup that I only left New York City FOUR times last year. While I’m a big believer in everyday adventures and taking advantage of your own city, I’d like to get out more – a lot more – this year. The #Take12Trips challenge started over on Need Another Holiday and since then I’ve seen it pop up on lots of other blogs. Twelve sounds like a lot – three times as many as last year! – but I already have three booked in the next three months, so we’re right on track! (DC, San Francisco, Phoenix: See y’all soon). I’m so excited to see more of my country!

Read 52 books

“It is always better to have read too much than not enough.” – Ann Patchett

In 2015 my goal was to read 30 books. Then, in the spring, my friend Samy invited me to be a part of her One Book A Week project. I’ve been a regular contributor, but a book a week felt really overwhelming at the time. But! I read 38 books in 2015, and that included some doozies that took several weeks, and also included some time off here and there. So I now believe 52 books is totally feasible for me, and I can’t wait to get started! I have a whole stack of books ready to go, a loaded Kindle, and a library card.

Love people better

“Remember that everyone you meet is afraid of something, loves something and has lost something.” – H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

Love is my word of the year for 2016. I’m planning to focus on my relationships, on being a better friend, sister, daughter, etc. Mind you, I don’t think I’m bad at being these things, but this year I’m going to be more intentional than ever about supporting and encouraging the people in my life – and cutting out the gossip and other toxic habits.

30-day challenges

“May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you’re wonderful, and don’t forget to make some art – write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope, somewhere in the next year, you surprise yourself.” – Neil Gaiman

My friend Misha gave herself a different challenge every month last year,  and even from across the country I can see the world of difference it’s made in forming her into the person she wants to be. So this year, I’m following suit. I had great success with little challenges like this last year: 21 days without social media, 40 days without alcohol, 21 days without television streaming. I’m excited to pursue them more intentionally, taking little steps throughout the year to improve my health, spirit, career, and overall well-being. I’m kicking it off with one I already know I can do, from experience, but desperately need to do again: January will be booze-free.

It looks to be a wonderful year, and I’m so glad you’re all along for the ride. Happy New Year!

Over the past few weeks my Instagram has slowly become less of a log of my day-to-day activities and more a mixture of current sights, throwbacks and blog promotion. I may start to reconsider this blog feature and make it more of a regular update rather than a strict Instagram feature, but in the meantime, here are some little glimpses into NYC life lately!

This one’s poor quality, but important for a number of reasons: Christmas lights! America! And the Empire State Building: Although it was lit for a different cause, orange is the color of CRPS Awareness, and November is its month. I snapped this shot to honor my sister.

Another morning, another stroll through my favorite park. I know Washington Square pops up in a lot of these posts, but it just goes to show how beautiful and varying it really is.

On a hard-earned day off last week, I had planned to stay in bed binge-watching Master of None. But the sunlight was streaming in the window and I thought: How much longer will it really be warm enough outside to sit by the waterfront with a good book? The answer, of course, is not long at all. So off I went.

I realize I haven’t been back from Africa for even a month yet, but I’m already knee-deep in planning my first few trips of 2016: a long weekend in DC, a week in Phoenix and several days in San Francisco with my best friend Jordan! San Fran has long been on my list to visit (and I even almost moved there in 2014 instead of NYC!) and I’m so excited to finally check it off.

Rounding out this post with a little throwback celebration: Jordan and I are proud 2011 alumni of Arizona State University, and yesterday the football team absolutely crushed the University of Arizona. It’s the oldest, fiercest college rivalry in America and I couldn’t be prouder to be on the winning side. Sun Devils Forever!

Annnnnd, we’re back.

I had planned to get at least one or two Africa posts up by now, but I’m still having trouble finding words for everything, and so that will continue to be pushed off. Soon, I promise! For now, some glimpses into life in New York City, both before and since my trip.

Just after my most recent post, fall started and everyone busted out their best cool-weather outfits. Turns out mine and Kelli’s are pretty similar – right down to the hairstyle!

Nothing better than bookending a day with a morning walk through  my favorite park, and a nighttime walk through the Financial District.

A night at The Smith and a catch-up with my sweet friend Victoria ended with the discovery of a photobooth in the bathrooms (?!) and the realization that we are both terrible at photobooths.

Community groups are in full swing, meaning I have a built-in excuse to hang out with friends on Saturday nights.

The foliage has been gorgeous this season, and this one particular tree on my block was way ahead of the game.

One of my favorite ways to kill an afternoon: Picking up a book at the Mid-Manhattan Library, walking across the street and reading it on the front patio of the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building (aka what most people think of when they picture the New York Public Library).

My friend Misha sends a fantastic Halloween care package every year (she’s close with all three of us roommates!) and I had to laugh when I pulled out this Brooklyn Nine-Nine mug – I’d say the officers look right at home with Leslie Knope, which was a gift from Kelli earlier this year!

Nothing beats walking across the Brooklyn Bridge at sunset, even if the temperatures are dipping and the walkway is packed with tourists.

When I got back to the northern hemisphere, I was thrilled to see that the leaves hadn’t fallen yet. I immediately ditched my bags at home and went for a wander through Brooklyn (ending, of course, at my favorite coffee shop).

My sweet little brother celebrated his 23rd birthday last week, causing my usual wander down memory lane. Look how cute we once were!

Yes, more fall! I’m thrilled to report that my attempt to actually enjoy it this year has been mostly successful.

Was I the only one OVERJOYED when Apple finally gave us a taco emoji?! Of course I couldn’t update my phone right away on the weak wifi in Swaziland, but you better believe it was one of the first things I did upon my return. And then: A celebration at Domo!

Finally: Halloween. I didn’t plan a costume this year, instead choosing to partner with Emmie the Pinata. I’d say it worked out!

So how are all of you, friends?! Catch me up!

How to spend just one day in NYC

I get A LOT of visitors here in New York. It turns out that as soon as you move to a touristy place, friends and family are suddenly keen to pop in for a few days at a time. I also get to spend time with people who are passing through the city for other reasons, as was the case when Jordan was in town – she was technically here for a business trip, and when all was said and done, we only had ONE full day to hit all of the sites in Manhattan.

Yep, you read that right: One day to tour this island, filled with centuries of history and countless skyscrapers and 8 million people. I won’t try to convince you that we saw absolutely everything (I’m not sure a lifetime would be enough time for that!) but I think Jordan got a good taste of the city – and definitely some ideas for what to do on her next trip!

Here’s a one-day itinerary, tried and tested by yours truly. My biggest tips? Wear walking shoes, and carry a bottle of water!

Take the B or C train to 72nd St. Take a wander east and south through Central Park. Below 72nd Street looks like a tiny sliver on a map of the park, but you’ll be shocked at how much you’ll see.

Exit the park at Fifth Ave and Central Park South. Walk down Fifth Ave and marvel at the fancy shopping (then pop into H&M for some affordable finds). If you need a bathroom, go to Bloomingdale’s – they’re on the second floor by the elevator. Gawk at the Trump Tower (be sure to wave at the protesters always stationed outside the door!)

Grab some pizza from one of the myriad places to do so. I can vouch for My Pie, but it’s hard to find bad pizza in this city. Take your slice down to Rockefeller Plaza and eat on the benches there.

Rockefeller is my favorite place in the city, so I’m biased, but while you’re there do some of the following: Visit the NBC Experience store, try to get tickets to a show if it’s the right time of day* (SNL is obviously my favorite!), head to the Top of the Rock*, take a tour of Radio City.*

Walk west on 50th Street to 7th Avenue, until you hit Times Square. You only need to see it once, but seeing the lights is a must for first-time visitors to the city. Take some pictures, pop into a gift shop, laugh at the characters. Get discounted Broadway tickets at TKTS, or at a show’s lottery a couple hours before showtime.*

By now, I’m guessing your feet are killing you (mine were and I walk a lot!). Take any of the trains downtown to the World Trade Center. Take some time for reflection at St. Paul’s and the memorial fountains. Go through the 9/11 Museum* or head to the top of the Freedom Tower.*

IMG_5775

It’s probably about dinnertime by now. Head back to wherever you’re staying – it was Brooklyn for us – and grab some dinner and drinks (my favorite recommendations are here!) Reflect on your day, and then sleep like a baby!

*A lot of these recommendations take up quite a chunk of time, and you won’t have time for ALL of these activities in one day. I’d suggest picking one or two!
