Why I didn’t make a vlog today

Happy hump day, everybody!

I totally intended to make a vlog for today’s #BlogtemberChallenge prompt. Really! I had yesterday planned out down to the minute. I was going to leave the office at 5 p.m. on the dot, take the train home to Brooklyn, grab some takeout, make a vlog, and be back in the city in time for my friend Kelli’s 8 p.m. volleyball game. Totally doable and not crazy at all, right?!

But then… the work day ended just as the sun came out from behind the clouds for the first time all day. My friend Amanda said she was free for dinner before the game. So instead of being squished on the A train at rush hour come 5:15, I found myself sitting in the park with a book. Instead of rushing through a vlog that probably would have been terrible anyway, I took a stroll up Fifth Avenue. And instead of mediocre takeout, I had a burger and sweet potato fries with my sweet friend.
http://instagram.com/p/tBglKmu5_2/?modal=trueBy the time we met up with more girlfriends for the volleyball game (which Kelli’s team WON!), I was feeling full. Full of love and joy and laughter. Sometimes it’s important to take a step back and remember that there’s more to life than blogging (and work). Savor everything!

So – no vlog today. Instead you get a very refreshed and relaxed blogger (even though she got up at 5:30 today to watch the Mindy Project season premier – WORTH IT). To make up for it, here’s a picture from the game last night:

See how much fun we're having?!

See how much fun we’re having?!

Don’t worry, tomorrow’s post on my favorite topic – travel – is already drafted and scheduled, so if today’s game plan of heading straight home and writing all night gets derailed by sunshine and friendship, we’ll still be on track!

Tell me, how are you this fine Wednesday?

#BlogtemberChallenge Day 16: A not-so-secret secret

“Most people don’t know this but…”

I’m taking some liberty with this one. Anyone who’s known me for more than six months knows this. But I’m new to the blogging community, and I’m new to New York, so this post is more for them.

I turned this prompt over to my sister for ideas and she rattled off some inside jokes that would make no sense to any of you, such as, “… my middle name is Penelope.” (My middle name is not Penelope.) BUT these remarks did make me laugh and inspire my true response:

“… my little sister is my best friend.”

With Ally at our high school's homecoming game in 2013, her senior year.

With Ally before our high school’s homecoming game in 2013, her senior year.

Seriously. Ally is 7 years younger than me – she’s 18 and just started college at Texas State. She was barely 12 the last time we lived together for an extended time. So many people I know have drifted away from their siblings, especially those much older or much younger than them. But Ally and I (and our brother, Steve) have only gotten closer over the years.

This girl is about twelve times smarter than I am. She’s good at (and likes!) science, which just completely baffles this liberal-arts girl. She has a big ol’ heart for her friends, her dog, and her family. She celebrates her personal struggles as she fights to overcome them because she knows they make her who she is. I want to be like Ally when I grow up.

I talk to this girl every day. In 30 seconds we can go from talking about her upcoming biology exam, to analyzing a video of Ellen DeGeneres and Kristen Wiig singing Let It Go, to sending selfies of new clothes (all things that happened Monday). I once told her I wanted to be a unicorn (I believe this conversation was my last semester of college, which should explain everything), and she sent me this:

That is me, as a unicorn, in New Orleans.

That is me, as a unicorn, in New Orleans.

Ally reads this blog “multiple times a day,” I learned today, which explains why I have three times as many page views as I do visitors. Basically, I hijacked the Blogtember prompt to brag about my sister. Worth it.

Fall TV 2014

Hello friends! I’m skipping today’s BlogtemberChallenge prompt for a couple reasons: I’m awful at PhotoShop, and I’ve been wanting to talk about fall TV on here – and it starts this week! I’ll be back on the challenge tomorrow, so don’t you worry.

So here’s a weird thing: I haven’t had cable in over three years, but I adore TV. I watch dramas, comedies, reality shows – you name it. All of this viewing is done via HuluPlus – for less than $10 a month. It’s totally worth it if you ask me, even if I do have to wait a day (more like just a few hours if I watch in the morning!) to see my shows.

I wanted to give you all a glimpse of what I’m planning to watch this season, and find out what your favorites are!

Story of my life

Story of my life

The Mindy Project (premieres TOMORROW! September 16): I’ll admit, I didn’t like this when it first premiered. I thought Mindy (both the actress and the character) was flakey and shallow. But last year my friend Nicole insisted I give it another chance – she even gave me her season 1 DVDs to borrow the day she got them in the mail. I’m SO GLAD I re-watched, and caught up on season 2, because this is probably my favorite show now. Yep, I said it. I can’t wait to see how things unfold between Mindy Lahiri and Danny Castellano – my new favorite couple on television.

Grey’s Anatomy (premieres September 25) I don’t actually like Grey’s Anatomy. It was strong for a couple seasons, but really, no show needs to last eleven years. But I just can’t stop watching. It’s like a trainwreck. I need to know who dies of what random ailment, I need to know whether Derek and Meredith can go the distance, I need to know what the heck they plan to do without Sandra Oh in the cast. I will watch this show until it goes off the air, which I hope is soon.

There’s nothing I love more than a blunt redhead.

Scandal (premieres September 25) I’m starting to come off of this show a bit, too, even though a year ago I listed it among my favorites. If Olivia can stop chasing Fitz like a lovesick child, I can get back on board. I am really looking forward to this season, though, because I’ve heard they’re finally going to focus on my favorite character, Abby. You know how she’s always standing in the background making sarcastic comments while the gladiators work on a crisis? Yeah. That’s me.

How to Get Away With Murder (premieres September 25) I really, really didn’t want to pick up any new shows this season, but how can I resist another Shonda Rhimes drama?! Although if the above two are any indication, this will be good for about three seasons and then get ridiculous. Oh well. I’m on board anyway.

Parenthood (premieres September 25) Wow, Thursdays are going to be intense this year. I adore Parenthood, and sometimes I feel like the only one. The Bravermans remind me of my own family, especially now that we “kids” are all grown up and have our own lives. This is the last season for Parenthood, which makes me want to cry – but when does this show not make me want to cry?!

Saturday Night Live (premieres September 27) Yes, I still watch SNL every weekend. No, it’s not nearly as good as it was in the early 2000’s when I used to sneak out of bed to watch it live (sorry Mom). And yeah, I’m upset they’re replacing Cecily Strong at the Weekend Update desk. But I’m obsessed with comedy and I can’t. stop. watching. Also, my roommate and I entered the lottery for tickets this season, so keep your fingers crossed for us! (Also, one of the reasons I love Liberty Church so much: Yesterday we we watched a digital short during the sermon. And it was totally relevant.)

How can you not love a show that lets you stare at this face for 30 minutes a week?

How can you not love a show that lets you stare at this face for 30 minutes a week?

Brooklyn Nine-Nine (premieres September 28) I binge-watched Brooklyn Nine-Nine in its entirety the day after it won two Golden Globes, back in January. I thought to myself, huh, this show must be good, I’ll watch the pilot tomorrow and judge for myself. Next thing I know, I’ve watched the entire series – nine or twelve episodes at the time. This show is probably the smartest comedy on television right now, and one of the only ones that consistently makes me laugh out loud. Plus Andy Samberg is adorable.

Now, those of you who know me well will notice that a couple of “my” shows are missing from this list. I’ve officially given up on Nashville after realizing that I only watched it for the music, which is made available on Spotify anyway. And I’m going to watch the first episode or two of New Girl, but I’m pretty sure I’ll be ditching that as well. Last season was awful – they did not handle the Nick and Jess relationship well at all – and I fear they won’t be able to restore the glory of season 2.

In the spring, I’ll be adding back Broad City and Parks and Recreation.

What are you planning to watch this season?

P.S. Remember when I blogged about my friend Courtney’s visit? She just posted a recap of her own, focusing on our foodie adventures. Check it out!

#BlogtemberChallenge Day 14: Blogging

When did you start blogging and why?

Oh, what a question. I started blogging in Fall 2009, when I live-blogged every episode of So You Think You Can Dance. (That’s here, if you need a laugh). That lasted one season, plus a random post in 2010. I started blogging again in Fall 2010 because it was a requirement for the digital media class I was taking. Man, nothing makes you hate something more than it being a requirement. I blogged about teaching myself to cook and stopped on the final day of the semester. (Sorry, you can’t read that gem – it was hosted on my school’s website and deleted when I graduated).

So, how did A Genuine Delight come to be? The seed was planted in March, when I moved cross-country and everyone (well, my mom) asked how they could keep up with my adventures. The name and concept were born after I received a lovely note (well, a Facebook message) from my great-aunt in Thailand. I built the site at the beginning of August, wrote the About page, and sent it to my lovely supportive friend Kathleen. And then I wrote the first post three weeks ago!

http://instagram.com/p/pKt6DrO58y/?modal=trueI love to write, so why not put some of those thoughts on display?

So, this website is still very, very new. I’m still learning what I want it to look like, what its purpose is, how I want it to function. I started it for a variety of reasons, outlined in that first post. But even over the course of a few weeks it’s done more for me than I could have imagined. It’s forced me to think deeply about myself and the world (largely thanks to the BlogtemberChallenge). It’s prompted some discussions with the people I know. And it’s “introduced” me to new friends and bloggers I didn’t know before!

I’m so thrilled I decided to start blogging – and even more thrilled that I’ve done it on my own timetable.

#BlogtemberChallenge Day 13: Singleness

Your current relationship status. If dating/married, give us a glimpse of your story! If single, share about this special season.

I am single.

Now, if you’re anything like 95% of the people I know, upon reading that sentence you likely cocked your head to the side, thought some variation of aww, and perhaps started compiling a mental list of eligible bachelors you know in the greater New York City area. Well you can stop that right now, and not just because dating in NYC is just as awful as it’s portrayed on television.

I really need to change the way I define my “relationship status.” I am joyfully, enthusiastically single, and not necessarily looking to change that. I am single by choice.

building my empire

If you recall my post on things I love about myself , you’ll remember that my number one favorite quality is my independence. I’m not all about having guys pay for my meals and deal with household stuff, which are things many of my attached girlfriends define as the perks of relationships. I’m quite capable, thankyouverymuch. I was never the kid dreaming about wedding dresses and babies – I was the kid dreaming about brownstones and magazines.

I’m single, and I’m loving it. Maybe God is preparing a husband for me. Maybe He isn’t, and I’m meant to be single my whole life. I’d be content with that. Sometimes I’m hopeful for it! Frankly – if I’d been in a relationship earlier this year, I may not have dropped everything to chase a crazy dream in the Northeast. I may not have joined Liberty and the community groups that have changed my life. I may not be spending my Saturday drafting blog posts – maybe I wouldn’t have even started blogging at all.

exclamation point

Don’t get me wrong – I think relationships are wonderful things. I’ve had them before. I have many friends who are married – two just had their wedding last night, in fact. I love and support those relationships because I know that they are good and godly. And because those friends support my singleness in the same way.
