The blizzard that wasn’t

If you were on the Internet at all in the first part of this week, you probably heard of a little something called winter storm Juno. AKA my worst nightmare, or so I thought.

When news broke on Sunday that we in NYC would be hit with our first blizzard of the season, people were anxious. The words historic and biggest ever and three feet of snow were being tossed around, and not just by 20-somethings at my church – by meteorologists and newscasters and the mayor. Everyone headed to the grocery stores, which had become war zones. Or so I heard. My friends and I went out for ice cream.

By the time I got to work Monday morning, the snow was already coming down, despite the fact that the blizzard wasn’t supposed to hit until that night. Oh, boy. I made arrangements with my boss so I could leave in time to get back to Brooklyn before sunset, and take my laptop with me to work from home – at that point I expected to be housebound for days. By lunchtime, my roommate was texting me from Arizona – her return flight, originally scheduled to get in late Tuesday, had already been cancelled and she was rebooked for Wednesday, hopefully. So I’d be riding out the storm of the century on my own.

By mid-afternoon, the wind had picked up and the snow was sticking.IMG_3374 IMG_3375

So we were right on schedule for three feet of snow. I left the office, hit up the bank for cash (it had closed early, along with basically every other business, but the ATMs were still open), schlepped home and settled in for what I expected would be the long haul. News broke that the trains were shutting down – the first time in over 100 years such an act had been prompted by snow alone. I cooked basically all of my food, dug out the super strong flashlight, fielded a phone call from my nervous father, and went to bed with my alarm set for 7:30, a solid 90 minutes later than I normally sleep. When the alarm blared, I rolled over and opened my curtain, expecting to be buried.

Instead, I saw… not much more than had been there the day before. I grabbed my phone and opened Twitter (thank goodness my cleanse was over, right?!) to a stream of articles with titles like “NYC completely overreacts” and “How the city’s unnecessary shutdown will negatively impact the economy.” Fun stuff. Lucky for me (and basically everyone else), the trains were still down and so I got to stay in my pajamas all day and work from my couch. My roommate returned the next day and life has returned to normal, although the grocery stores remain unstocked.

Although, it’s snowing today. Here we go again..

Were you impacted by Juno?

Adventuring on the Upper West Side

As thrilled as I am to have settled into a life and a routine here in New York City, sometimes I get an itch for an adventure. It’s the sort of craving that, when I lived in Phoenix, required packing up the car and heading into the mountains for the day, or to the beach if I had more than a day to work with. Now, though, I can grab my purse, hop on the train, and be in a completely different world within an hour – and without leaving the city! So when I realized a couple weeks ago that life was feeling a little stale, that’s exactly what I did: Took the C train from my central Brooklyn apartment to a Manhattan neighborhood I’d barely touched on yet – the Upper West Side.

It was a bit of a drab day involving quite a bit of snow (slushy snow, not pretty snow), and it ended with some pretty serious retail therapy at Columbus Circle, but I still had a chance to explore the stunning Riverside Park, and can’t wait to go back in a different season!

My week in non-Instagram photos: 1/11/15

It took me a few days this week to realize that even though I’m doing a social-media cleanse, I can still take pictures of what I’m doing! Today, I present you with an unfiltered look into my life offline.

I had Friday off from work (thank goodness – this week was more than a little stressful) and so slept in before venturing into the city for brunch with my roommate Becca and our friend Jess. I had been to Poco before – their unlimited mimosas make it my favorite spot to bring out-of-town friends – but this was the first time I’d had the French toast. It was incredible and I know I’ll be having it again!

In case you weren’t sure how cold it was in NYC: Cold enough for the fountain at Bryant Park to freeze. Seeing the fountain frozen is basically a rite of passage in the city, so I ventured up to snap some photos after brunch (before jumping right back on the train to Brooklyn).

Yesterday was such a fun night in the city – a bunch of girls from church rented a space and we watched Clueless and just enjoyed each other’s company. After the movie, a bunch of us headed to Schnipper’s for a late-night snack. Although the restaurant is known for burgers and sweet-potato fries, I couldn’t resist some mac & cheese!

And finally, for a bit of self-promotion. Liberty Church’s community groups opened sign-ups this morning! Sign-up day is always one of my favorites – sorting through the groups and weeding it down to one or two to join is such a challenge! This season is especially special to me for a couple reasons. This will be my third community group season at Liberty, meaning that when it’s over, I’ll have been a part of this incredible church for a full year! Time flies! I’m also excited because I am leading a community group for the very first time! My friend Bre and I will be teaching The Power of a Praying Woman on Tuesday nights in the Union Square neighborhood – so if you’re a Liberty lady or live in NYC, we’d love to have you join!

I hope you’re all having a wonderful, relaxing weekend!

Looking ahead to 2015

Holy cow, we’re already a week into 2015! As reluctant as I was to wave goodbye to the happiest year of my life, the clock struck midnight while I was freezing my butt off on Coney Island with my favorite group of southerners in the city. 2015 has already been good to me, and I’m determined to keep up the momentum and make it the best year of my life.

On New Year’s Eve I set up camp in a local coffee shop with my new journal and cast a vision for myself in 2015, determining the kind of woman I want to be this year so that I can refer back to it over the coming months and use it to shape my decisions and actions. 2014’s vision was basically, “I want to be the kind of woman who lives in New York City,” which obviously worked out great. But it’s harder for me to cast vision over a year that, God willing, won’t consist of much change. 2015 looks to be a year of commitment and stability, two things that frankly terrify me, but that I’m so excited for.

As I looked over my vision, I realized that it can all be summed up with one word: intention. I want to be intentional about how I spend my time and money, about what I consume both physically and mentally. With that in mind, here are some goals (I hate the term resolution – it feels like I’m setting myself up for failure!) that I’ve laid out for the coming months.

Spend less time on my phone This is the big one, and the closest thing I have to a true resolution. It was inspired by this Buzzfeed post. I turned off all of my notification except texting, am trying to leave my phone in my purse when I’m at work or out with friends, and – the biggie – am three days into a 21-day social-media cleanse. That’s right: No Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Swarm or Pinterest (except for work). I’m hoping to do a full post on this soon!

Read the Bible I’ve never done a one-year bible reading plan, and around November I really started to feel like this was something I wanted to tackle in 2015. After some debate, I decided to read it chronologically, and my mom bought me this version for Christmas. So far, so good!

Read 30 books I set a reading goal every year, and usually I try to bump it up from the year before, but my goal was 30 in 2014 and I only read 24. So! I’m trying again. I’m currently working through Live From New York, and I have a whole stack ready to go – plus my book club – so it looks promising!

One Little Word This is my third year picking one little word to pray over my year, and for 2015 it’s obedience. I have a feeling this will be a hugely personal journey, but I’m at least sharing what it is so I can have some accountability!

All in all, I’m so excited for this fresh start and the year ahead. It looks to be a great one! Happy (belated) New Year, friends!

My Week(s) in Instagrams: 1/3/15

Hello and happy New Year, friends! I just cannot believe it’s 2015 – despite my best efforts, 2014 has come to an end and now there is a fresh new year to make our own. But more on that later. For now, my Instagram feed remains holiday-heavy! Here’s a peek at the last two weeks since I returned to NYC:

Immediately upon my return to Brooklyn, I popped by the grocery store and picked up this mini poinsettia. You can never have too many Christmas things, in my opinion! It’s still going strong, thanks to my lovely roommate who waters it because I am super forgetful.

IMG_3257

I’m not the only one who loves Christmas! Becca and I planned a fancy Christmas breakfast and cocktails, I made snickerdoodles for dessert, and she hosted friends for dinner while I worked. We somehow fit all the ingredients into our tiny fridge – feeling like adult Tetris champions over here.

Christmas day was GORGEOUS here on the East coast – temperatures in the 60’s! I took the opportunity to take the long way into work, wandering through Washington Square Park to admire the Christmas tree.

IMG_3278

Sometimes I think the day after Christmas is better than the holiday itself: Writing to loved ones, watching holiday episodes of my favorite shows, and utilizing those gifts – such as that gorgeous mug Becca gave me!

Yup, she’s still the prettiest city in the world. No filter on this one besides the natural golden hour.

IMG_3284

Sometimes I have to get up at 6 a.m. on the weekends to head into the office, but God is pretty good about rewarding me for my trouble! Not long after this sunrise, the clouds rolled in and it rained all day. Sigh.

IMG_3314

Yesterday I ventured to the Upper West Side on a solo adventure – more on that soon! I spotted this squirrel in Riverside Park and he spent a good five minutes just striking poses for the camera. What a ham.

The city is still in full Christmas mode with decorations all around! This is overlooking Columbus Circle from the shops on a tragically snowy day.
