Catching up via Instagram: 3/20/16

As I’m sure you’ve noticed, life has been a little crazy lately with travels – yet I still have so many nuggets of New York life to share with you all! We were blessed with a mild winter and an early spring – my favorite season! – so every second I spend in the city is filled with adventure. Here’s a peek!

New York City skyline

The day I left for San Francisco was, naturally, the first truly warm day in a while – as in, light jackets were all that the weather required. The streets were filled with happy New Yorkers frolicking in the sunshine. Although I was cooped up in the office and then headed straight to the airport, I was so glad to soak up the sun rays through our floor-to-ceiling windows.

Luckily, the good weather repeated itself the next weekend, and I continued snapping pictures of the blue skies every chance I got.

Burger and fries at Dutch Boy, Crown Heights, Brooklyn

Upon return from our trip to the Bahamas, my friends and I weren’t quite ready to say goodbye to each other or the long weekend – even though we’d just spent three full days in each others’ company. So when we got back to Brooklyn, our first stop was our local burger joint, Dutch Boy – I just can’t wait until it’s warm enough to drink at their attached outdoor bar, Franklin Park!

As the warm weather continued, I celebrated in every way I could think of: I grabbed a bouquet of flowers for my windowsill. I spent my free days sitting by the water with a book and enjoyed the views. I grabbed ice cream with my friends (bonus: the ice cream had donut chunks in it, and the cone was funfetti. Ice & Vice is a MUST!) I saw the sun set on the way to dinner.

I’m a huge fan of snail mail and especially postcards, so I was thrilled when my best friend Jordan sent this postcard from my favorite rum bar in Phoenix.

Possibly the most exciting thing to happen lately: We renewed our lease! I’m so excited for a third year in Crown Heights. Also, as of November 2016, this will be the longest I’ve ever lived in one apartment, including my apartments in Phoenix. Who would have thought I’d be at my most stable in such a transient city?!

Of course all good things must come to an end, and last week was rather cloudy and rainy – still, just another sign of spring. As much as I prefer sunny days, I can’t deny the beauty of New York in the gloom – especially at sunrise!

The houses of San Francisco

One of the things that struck me about San Francisco is how original and gorgeous so many of the houses are. Every single street felt like something out of a postcard, and I couldn’t help but think how lovely it would be to live in a home as gorgeous as these. Here are some pictures of my favorites…

San Francisco’s Coit Tower

As usual, the first thing I wanted to do in San Francisco was check out the views from as high up as possible. The cool thing about San Francisco is that you can get views pretty much anywhere – they do, after all, call it the City of Hills. Still, I dragged Jordan to Coit Tower – 210 feet in the air and just a few blocks from where we were staying – so I could be sure I wasn’t missing a thing.

Getting to Coit Tower

The first thing you need to know if you want to visit Coit Tower is that you have to work for it. The tower itself is at the top of a hill. We climbed the Greenwich Street steps, which is definitely a hardcore workout. They do wind through public gardens and past beautiful buildings, and you can glimpse some previews of the views you get at the top. Next time, though, I would take the bus!

The murals at Coit Tower

Once you make it inside the tower, there are murals depicting life in San Francisco during the depression – fascinating to this history buff, but maybe not to most visitors. And then, you ascend to the top in an elevator (thank goodness, because my feet were past done!)

From the observation deck you can see all of San Francisco: the Golden Gate and Bay bridges, downtown, and more – we even spotted our apartment building!

If you want to visit Coit Tower: It’s located on Telegraph Hill in the Northeast part of the city – easy to visit the same day you do Fisherman’s Wharf. You can climb the Greenwich or Filbert Street steps as we did, or take the 39 Bus. It costs $8 for non-residents to take the elevator to the top (well worth it), and guided tours are also available for purchase.

Street art in San Francisco’s Mission District

I was a little hesitant to visit the Mission District in San Francisco, just because so many people had recommended it to me. I was worried it would be too trendy, too weird, maybe trying a bit too hard.

But after Jordan headed back to Phoenix and I had checked off pretty much every touristy thing on my San Francisco to-do list, I made my way to the Mission District on my last morning. I mainly went to try a restaurant that had a grilled cheese sandwich with macaroni and cheese inside (SO GOOD), but also to see what the fuss was about.

As I wandered down Valencia Street I was struck by how much this part of San Francisco reminded me of Brooklyn (which is where I live). There were trendy coffee shops, an alternative bookstore, a mixture of boutiques and thrift shops. It was cool, to be sure, but I hardly felt like I was on the other side of the country from my home borough.

But then – I stumbled upon Clarion Alley, which is apparently one of several alleys in the Mission donning street art. And I loved it! Not only was the art gorgeous and colorful, it was all purposeful – there were murals protesting everything from capitalism to high housing prices (something this New Yorker can definitely relate to).

All in all, Clarion Alley (and that sandwich, let’s be real) made my visit to the Mission District well worth the long bus ride from North Beach. Sometimes places are popular for a reason!

A long weekend in the Bahamas

About eight weeks ago, I got a Facebook message from my friend Auston: Airfare to the Bahamas was on sale, did anyone want to join him for a long weekend in March? The catch was that we had to book that evening, before fares skyrocketed again. I’m pretty sure he didn’t think anyone would commit, but last Friday 11 of us rocked up to JFK and flew to Nassau, where we spent three days bonding in a beachfront condo. AKA the perfect weekend with the perfect crew!

Our condo literally could not have been closer to the beach, and was outfitted with two decks and a swimming pool (which I was definitely thrown into in the middle of the night after a few too many drinks). This was my first trip to the Caribbean, let alone the Bahamas, and I was blown away by how clear the water was! I also got the watch the sunrise every morning from my bed. NBD.

Best friends in Nassau, Bahamas

I was so excited my best friend Emmie came along as well. We’re pretty much attached at the hip but this was our first vacation together!

We did spend one day (the rainiest one, conveniently) exploring downtown Nassau. Or at least, exploring the Bahamian bars. The vibe is so different from New York City but I was obsessed with the shacks, the ocean views and even the kitschy tourist traps.

The best part of the weekend in the Bahamas, besides the quality time with my favorites, was getting to break out swimsuits and dresses. The weather was my definition of perfect, and I got more fresh air in those three days than I had in months. I also was one of the only few to escape without a sunburn! Thanks for the adventure, Bahamas – I’ll be back!
