#BlogtemberChallenge Day 23: My City

A guide to your city! Share some of the hot-spots and hidden gems of where you live.

If you’ve read even a single post on this blog, you know that I love my city. It’s my favorite city in the world. I went through hell and high water to get here, and frankly, I go through it every day just to keep living here. It’s worth it.

My city is New York City.

I’ve only lived here for six months, though (almost to the day!) so I’m still learning myself. I think I could live here forever and still be learning. I sat next to a family on a flight Monday that was going to visit NYC for the very first time. Every time they told me something they were planning to do (Phantom of the Opera, a helicopter ride over Times Square, the Statue of Liberty…) my response was, “Oh, I’ve heard that’s so fun! I haven’t done it yet, though…”

So, what have I done? These are some of my very favorite ways to spend time in NYC:

  • Sit in a park with a book. My favorites are the High Line, Hudson River Park, Central Park (of course!), Bryant Park and Brooklyn Bridge Park.
  • Smorgasburg. Every weekend local restaurants set up at a riverfront park in Brooklyn (East River State Park on Saturdays and Brooklyn Bridge Park on Sundays) so you can stuff your face and stare at the city’s skyline.
  • Eat. Nearly all of the food here is phenomenal, whether you’re getting a fancy dinner at DBGB or a slice of dollar pizza at a corner shop.
  • Drink coffee. Visit local coffee shops instead of one of the 8 trillion Starbucks. Trust me – you get not only fantastic coffee, but the owners are always great fun to chat with. My favorites are Happy Bones and Two Hands.
  • Sit on rooftops. As much as I love admiring the skyline from across the East River, sometimes it’s fun to be in the middle of Manhattan and rise above the madness. I love the Empire Hotel for drinks (bonus: It’s Chuck Bass’ hotel on Gossip Girl) and Rockefeller Center for views.
  • Wander aimlessly. If I want to explore but don’t want to plan, I take the subway to a random station and explore that neighborhood. There is so much to see and do here, and that can be a really low-key way to do it.

Why I didn’t make a vlog today

Happy hump day, everybody!

I totally intended to make a vlog for today’s #BlogtemberChallenge prompt. Really! I had yesterday planned out down to the minute. I was going to leave the office at 5 p.m. on the dot, take the train home to Brooklyn, grab some takeout, make a vlog, and be back in the city in time for my friend Kelli’s 8 p.m. volleyball game. Totally doable and not crazy at all, right?!

But then… the work day ended just as the sun came out from behind the clouds for the first time all day. My friend Amanda said she was free for dinner before the game. So instead of being squished on the A train at rush hour come 5:15, I found myself sitting in the park with a book. Instead of rushing through a vlog that probably would have been terrible anyway, I took a stroll up Fifth Avenue. And instead of mediocre takeout, I had a burger and sweet potato fries with my sweet friend.
http://instagram.com/p/tBglKmu5_2/?modal=trueBy the time we met up with more girlfriends for the volleyball game (which Kelli’s team WON!), I was feeling full. Full of love and joy and laughter. Sometimes it’s important to take a step back and remember that there’s more to life than blogging (and work). Savor everything!

So – no vlog today. Instead you get a very refreshed and relaxed blogger (even though she got up at 5:30 today to watch the Mindy Project season premier – WORTH IT). To make up for it, here’s a picture from the game last night:

See how much fun we're having?!

Don’t worry, tomorrow’s post on my favorite topic – travel – is already drafted and scheduled, so if today’s game plan of heading straight home and writing all night gets derailed by sunshine and friendship, we’ll still be on track!

Tell me, how are you this fine Wednesday?

#BlogtemberChallenge Day 11: Inspiration

How do you stay inspired? Who inspires you the most?

I love this prompt and at the same time I don’t even know where to start! I am constantly inspired by the world around me, to the point that putting it into words is going to be a challenge – but then, that’s the point, yes?

I stay inspired by…

Maybe it's my journalism roots, but how can you come to Rockefeller Plaza and not leave inspired?

Maybe it’s my journalism roots, but how can you come to Rockefeller Plaza and not leave inspired?

Exploring the city I live in. I live in NYC, my very favorite city in the world, and it is constantly blowing my mind. I have my favorite spots to sit and read and ponder – along the Hudson in the West Village, Rockefeller Plaza, the Brooklyn Heights Promenade – but I also love to visit and explore new-to-me neighborhoods and sites. There is always something new to see or do here – how could one not be constantly inspired here?

Traipsing around the world. As much as I love NYC, sometimes a change of scenery is necessary to shake things up and remind me just how much I love my home. Whether it’s exploring a new city as I did in Toronto last weekend or re-visiting an old home as I’ll do in Dallas next week, it can be so refreshing to be in new surroundings, if only for a couple days.

This city girl isn't often inspired by small towns, but Lucerne, Switzerland, is simply magical.

Listening to musicI have Spotify playlists for basically every mood – songs that make me happy, songs that remind me of Texas, songs about following dreams. I constantly have music playing when I’m at work, when I’m writing, when I’m cooking – OK, all the time.

Learning as much as I can. I read books, and I’m in a book club so I’m not always confined to my favorite genres (historical fiction and memoirs). I’m a magazine fiend – I subscribe to Afar and my roommate gets Bon Appetit, plus I usually pick up one or two others throughout the month. I have something ridiculous like 200 blogs in my feedly. I just love to learn about the world around me.

Surrounding myself with people I admire and respect. My friends are awesome, y’all. They own their own businesses, they are pursuing degrees in subjects I can’t define, let alone study, they do crazy things like quit their jobs and move across the country to chase their dreams (sound familiar?) But the best thing about these people is that they are kind and supportive and they love and respect me as much as I do them. So that’s who I’m inspired by – the people in my life who aren’t afraid to take a chance. You all know who you are. (Hint: If you’re reading this, you inspire me.)

#BlogtemberChallenge Day 6: Currently…

Tell us what you’re loving, hating, reading, eating, etc.

I’m currently…

Doing: Work. Yep, I’m spending my Saturday in the office. I work one Saturday and one Sunday every month – and get three-day weekends the rest of the time. Totally worth it!

Reading: My Mistake by Daniel Menaker. I usually read a pretty even mix of fiction and non-fiction, but the last few books I’ve read have been novels (mostly for the book club I was a part of back in Phoenix – it’s so fun to read along with them!) I’m excited to dive into this memoir.

Wearing: My “uniform” – jeans, cotton shirt (today’s is white and orange stripes), sandals.

Buying: I wasn’t planning to buy any clothes or accessories this month because it won’t be long now until I have to invest in a winter coat. But yesterday, I was eating my lunch in the park and got pizza grease all over my favorite silver polyester skirt. Sigh. Since I had plans last night and didn’t want to worry about hiding the stain, I ran over to H&M (perks of working in SoHo!) and picked up a new skirt. It was only $13 and it should go with almost everything, so not a huge setback.

Listening to: Spotify’s Girlpower Anthems playlist.

Eating: Nothing at this exact moment, but I made a peanut butter and banana sandwich for lunch that I’m pretty excited about.

Drinking: Coffee and water.

Watching: I’m almost done with the third season of Gossip Girl on Netflix. That’ll probably go on hold in a couple weeks when fall shows start back up! Keep an eye out for a post on what I’ll be watching this season.

Planning: It’s been a crazy-busy week, so I’m excited to spend tonight and tomorrow at home watching Netflix, reading, drafting blog posts and generally relaxing. After I run to Trader Joe’s tonight, of course.

Processing: Sarah Dubbeldam, founder of Darling Magazine, spoke at Liberty‘s Sisterhood last night, and if you read my piece on what I want to be when I “grow up,” you can surely imagine how incredible this experience was. As in, life-changing.

SHE IS FREE

Excited for: SO MUCH. Last night, Liberty’s lead pastor, the fearless Andi Andrew, shared her vision for the women of NYC and it is incredible. If you’re in NYC, you’ll want to be at She Is Free next April – I’m already registered!

NYC summer bucket list: Complete!

Several months ago, I was sitting in a froyo shop with the ladies of my summer church community group. We went around and each listed three things we wanted to accomplish over the coming months – What were the quintessentially summer things that we couldn’t imagine our season without?

I rattled off the first three things that came to mind, giving no thought to how realistic they were or whether I would do all (or any!) of them. But I’m pleased to report that as of last weekend, I’ve checked everything off! And just in time for fall no less.

Here’s a glimpse of my first summer in the Big Apple:

Rockaway Beach, July 2014

Rockaway Beach, July 2014

1. Go to the beach

Over the past six years living in Phoenix, I became something of a beach bum. My default vacation spot was Los Angeles, and by the time I left the Southwest I was spending two to three weekends a year in Malibu and Santa Monica. So when I decided to move to New York, I was excited at the prospect of beaches close enough for day trips!

One day in July, when I had a random Monday off from work, I loaded up my tote bag, hopped on the A train and made my way to the Rockaways. It’s no Malibu, but with sand and sun only an hour away – who am I to complain? I had an incredibly relaxing day reading in the sand, and the best part was grabbing fish tacos at Rockaway Taco.

2. Go to a Major League Baseball game

Baseball is in my blood. My grandparents are huge fans, my parents are huge fans, and the obsession was passed right along to my generation as well. I’m a fan of the Rangers, the Indians and the Diamondbacks, but I’ll gladly go to any game – whether it’s at the end of the regular season or during spring training. With two teams right here in NYC, I knew I had no excuse!

I actually made it to two MLB games this summer – I saw my Rangers play (and beat!) the Yankees at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, and then I saw the Yankees again in Toronto last weekend against the Blue Jays. The Yankees lost both of those games, and as a girl raised with a Boston allegiance (I’ve never been, but my grandfather is from there!), that’s pretty much an ideal outcome. Paired with great friends, perfect weather and a beer – that’s my ideal summer day.

3. Take a road trip

This is the item I wasn’t sure I’d be able to check off, having sold my car when I moved to the city in March. But lo and behold, after returning from Europe in May, friends from that trip immediately started planning a reunion in Toronto. And a group from NYC was driving up and it was over a weekend I had off from work! So last Saturday I jumped in a car with my friends Taylor and AJ and drove 10 hours each way for a chance to spend a day and a half with wonderful friends in a new city. It was totally worth it. To me there’s nothing better than eating junk food, blasting the music and cruising through the countryside.

Knowing that I accomplished these things has made me less reluctant to see summer end and more excited to welcome fall! This will be my first true fall since I was about 11 – so you tell me, what are the things I can’t just need to do?
