On going ‘home’

This post brought to you by the common cold which has left me unable to do anything but work and sleep for the past four days.

A few weeks ago, I boarded a plane to Dallas – something I’d done dozens of times in the past. This time felt different.

I'm the furthest thing from a dog person, but I do love Lexi.

I’m the furthest thing from a dog person, but I do love Lexi.

I lived in the suburbs of Dallas from the ages of 12 to 18, and dropped in for extended stays until I graduated from college at 21. Since then, as I’ve taken on full-time jobs and my friends and siblings have moved on, the visits have become shorter, with more time between them. At some point, I stopped referring to these visits as going home and started saying I was going to visit my parents. All of this was natural, and the city felt less and less like home every time a new shopping center was erected or a new highway opened.

This visit, though – this one was distinctly different. For the first time, I was flying out to stay in a house I had never lived in. My parents downsized to a one-story house in the next neighborhood over back in the spring (around the same time I was frantically organizing a cross-country move myself!) I don’t have my own bedroom in this house (though I didn’t in the old house either – by the time they moved, it had long been converted to a home office!) I didn’t know where they kept the spoons for my breakfast cereal or where to find a top sheet for my sister’s bed. I certainly didn’t know the neighbor’s crazy dogs, who don’t seem to sleep.

This was also the first time I’d visited since my parents became empty-nesters! My sister-slash-best friend left for college in August and now my parents only have each other (and Ally’s Doberman-Beagle mix – yes, it’s a real thing). JUST KIDDING. They are living the dream and have booked up every weekend between now and Christmas with vacations and visits from us kids! It was wonderful to spend three days with just the two of them, something that likely hadn’t happened since I was an only child – a stint that ended when I was two-and-a-half. There were no arguments over where to go to dinner (tacos, every night), what to watch on TV (Modern Family marathon) or where to hang out one-on-one (shopping for me and Mom, breakfast-for-dinner at Cracker Barrel for me and Dad).

Truly the biggest difference between this visit and the previous ones? It was the most relaxing weekend I’ve had in a long time. I wasn’t visiting for a holiday or event, so there was no stress there. I got more sleep than I normally do. And really, although it was an unfamiliar house in a neighborhood I’d only visited once or twice for baby-sitting gigs – it felt like home.

I’ll be back soon with a full photo post from this trip! Hope you’re all having a wonderful week.

My week in Instagrams: 10/11/14

Hello friends! I hope your week has been fantastic! Here’s a peek at what I’ve gotten up to:

Instagram quilt

When I was in Dallas in September, I saw this gorgeous quilt in my parents’ living room (my mom made it, of course.) When she came out to visit a week later, she brought it to me! She’s quick to insist that it’s not a “keeping warm” quilt, but I beg to differ. It’s been perfect for curling up with!

Instagram Chrysler building

With some time to kill after work on Wednesday before meeting a friend, I wandered midtown taking photos – one of my favorite things to do! The reason I posted this one, though, was to go along with my favorite quote so far from Let’s All Be Brave: “Sometimes, you set sail without a view of the destination, trusting the tools you’ve got. And once you get there, you stay. You move forward, not backward. You burn your ships.”

Instagram skating rink

Yesterday I made my way up to Rockefeller Plaza – my favorite spot in the city – and was startled to see that the ice rink had already been installed! Winter is coming much, much faster than I anticipated. And yes, I did finally buy a coat.

Instagram FEED supper

Also last night, my darling friend Katie, who works for FEED, threw a FEEDsupper! Many of us gathered in her adorable Astoria apartment for a night of friendship and a home-cooked southern meal. Special thanks to Katie’s mom for coming up from Alabama and cooking for us!

Instagram JordanFinally, the week wraps up with a celebration. Today is my very best friend’s birthday! I haven’t seen Jordan since I moved from Phoenix in March, but we will be catching up on celebrations in person in just 63 days! This gem is a throwback to our college graduation party in 2011, and I promise the knife was used to cut the cake and nothing more.

What have you been up to?!

Be Brave: Speak Up

This week marks the first week of a new season of church community groups! This fall I’ll be reading Let’s All Be Brave with a group of the strongest, bravest women I know. As we explore the concept of bravery, I hope to share some of my thoughts here with you all. Consider this the first post in what will hopefully become my Be Brave series.

Last week we gathered in the Flatiron district to get to know each other and to begin discussing the idea of bravery. Mind you, this was a room full of women who all, at some point and for some reason, have dropped everything and moved to New York City. Not exactly a cowardly bunch. But there is always, always room for making improvements, taking risks and diving headfirst into what God wants you to do – what he asks you to do.

As we chatted, it occurred to me that the moment in my life that required the most courage wasn’t the one when I stepped onto the airplane to New York. It wasn’t the next day, when I bought my first subway pass and navigated public transit for the first time. It wasn’t the next week, when I walked into an unfamiliar office, sat down and began to work.

What I believe to be my bravest moment took place a year ago now, over breakfast (tacos, of course) with my parents during a trip to Dallas. It was the moment I first vocalized my desire to live in New York City.

In that moment, my perspective shifted from Maybe I could/should do this to I should definitely do this and I almost definitely canWhat was I so afraid of before speaking up? A couple things. First, I was worried no one would understand my dreams. My life in Phoenix made sense. I had a decent job, a one-bedroom apartment all to myself downtown, my brother in the same apartment complex and my grandparents a short drive away. I had a 401(k) and put enough money into savings to be able to travel quite a bit. Why would I want to put all that on the line, to trade it for sharing a smaller apartment, distance between myself and my loved ones, zero savings? I didn’t even understand the desire myself; how could I expect others to?

My second fear was that I wouldn’t be able to make my dreams happen – or that I would change my mind and chase a different dream instead. I was afraid of accountability, even though I needed it more than ever.

My parents, of course, were completely supportive and have remained so throughout this entire journey. They would have been even if I’d changed my mind. That support, and that of my friends, gave me the courage to take further steps, and ultimately to make the move.

The tacos that started it all

This journey all began because I was brave enough to speak up, to vocalize my dreams, to seek support. I’ll always consider the start of my NYC adventure to be that September breakfast, even though I wouldn’t board a one-way flight for another six months.

So if there’s something on your heart, a dream that feels impossible, don’t feel like you have to fulfill it today. Just talk about it, and the rest will fall into place.

A weekend in Toronto

I can’t believe over a month has passed since my trip to Toronto! In some ways, it feels like just this past weekend – but when I think about the gorgeous summer weather we enjoyed, it feels like it’s been an eternity.

Toronto is a city I feel gets overlooked a lot. New Yorkers seem to go to Montreal for their Canada fix. From Phoenix, the trend was to visit Vancouver. While I still hope to visit those cities someday, I’ve always wanted to travel to Toronto. Why is that? I grew up hearing tales of my mom and her girlfriends driving up there from Cleveland for long-weekend getaways, much as I always drove to LA from Phoenix. She loves the city so much that she and my dad went there on their honeymoon – and he loved it so much that they went back a few years later! As I inherited the “city girl” gene, I always knew I wanted my first trip to the Great White North to feature Toronto.

My favorite part of traveling is sampling local cuisine, such as poutine!

I was lucky enough to make friends from this amazing place while I was traveling in Europe this spring, and seven of us from that trip gathered over Labor Day weekend for a mini-reunion! We only had about 36 hours in the city, but as we are all seasoned travelers, we really crammed a lot in. And left plenty for me to see next time!

We found a bar with board games, and I won my first-ever round of Bananagrams!

It was a fantastic weekend getaway and I already can’t wait to go back!

Currently…

I miss you guys! I wanted to share a glimpse of what I’ve been up to this week and what’s in store for October. I’ll probably do something like this on a fairly regular basis. You can see my first currently post here!

Mom's in town!

Mom’s in town and she is VERY excited about the rooftop life!

Reading: Delicious! by Ruth Reichl, on my mother’s recommendation, and Let’s All Be Brave by Annie F. Downs for my church community group.

Wearing: Black jeans, long-sleeved striped t-shirt, boots – the fall version of my standard look! I also have my fake leather jacket on hand for chilly mornings and evenings.

Buying:  I’m still on the hunt for a winter coat, but I did buy a pair of Old Navy’s ankle pixie pants this week. Unfortunately, one of the seams is already coming undone so they will likely be returned and the search will start over.

Listening to: I’ve had Gloriana’s How Far Do You Wanna Go? on repeat all day.

Eating: Cantaloupe slices and a cheese stick as a mid-morning snack.

Drinking: Coffee. All the coffee. So much coffee.

Watching: Since it’s Friday, and basically all of my shows are on Thursdays, I am behind on EVERYTHING. As soon as I have a spare moment (so basically, next week) I’ll be settling in for Scandal, How to Get Away With Murder, Grey’s Anatomy, and Parenthood. Likely in that order.

Planning: My mom and her friend are in town this weekend, but it’s a very low-key visit and very little planning is required on my part. Yippee! I think tonight we’re heading to Times Square (eek) and my mom’s favorite restaurant, Serafina.

Excited for: Remember the other day when I said October would be relaxing, quiet, and so on? HAH! About 30 minutes after hitting publish on that post, I got an invite to a friend’s birthday at the end of the month – and a message from another friend (one I visited in Toronto over Labor Day) who is coming into town for the party! So I’ll be playing hostess yet again and spending quality time with some of my favorites. Way better than a month of nonstop Netflix!

Enjoying: FALL! OK, I’m still hardcore dreading winter. But fall doesn’t seem to be so bad. The changing leaves make me very very happy and it’s not too cold outside. Yet. When the sun is shining. Sigh.

The leaves are starting to change at Central Park!

Working on: I have so many blog post ideas for you guys, I just need to find the time to write them! I’m about halfway through a post on bravery that I’m hoping will become a series, and I still need to share gems from my recent trips to Toronto and Dallas. Soon! I promise!

Laughing over: Guys, it’s October third. Mean Girls  day. If you don’t get the reference, I command you to turn off your computer and commence watching the greatest movie of our generation. “On October 3, he asked me what day it was.” “It’s October 3.” Oh, Lindsay Lohan. You used to be so great.

What have you been up to lately?
