The first winter

Today marks the beginning of my first winter in NYC. Perhaps more unbelievably, this is the last season that I will be experiencing for the first time in this city.

I moved to Brooklyn from Phoenix on March 26, the fifth day of spring. The timing was completely unintentional on my part. Thanks to last year’s so-called polar vortex, temperatures were in the 20s and there was snow on the ground until my late-April birthday, but according to the calendar, it was spring. I watched the trees bloom, darted through traffic with an umbrella. After spring I spent summer days reading in the park and sipping iced coffee in hipster cafes. And then fall – I watched the leaves change and heard them crunch beneath my feet, cherished days crisp enough for sweaters but dreaded what came next.

Winter.

I’m a summer girl. I spent the first nine years of my life in Cleveland and never embraced the midwest winters. While my siblings and the neighbor kids were outside hurling snowballs at each other, I was inside with a book counting down the days until spring. From there, I moved – not by design – to progressively warmer climates. Colorado Springs, where the winters are mild and the snow is beautiful. Dallas, where it snows perhaps once a year, the entire city shuts down and hibernating is encouraged. Phoenix, where the temperatures once dipped below 30 and it made national news.

New York City, where the lights are bright and the weather is brutal.

I knew, in a sense, what I was getting into. Last year, my job revolved around national and international news. I’d sort through photos of people schlepping to work in yet another northeast blizzard, think that sucks, then grab a light jacket and wander across the street for some ice cream. Those images didn’t deter me. I’d go home after work and write cover letter after cover letter, trying to convince someone to hire me so I could move to this crazy place with literally unbelievable winters.

Now that another winter is upon the region, I’m balking. I’m terrified. In the spring, when I was chilled to the bone, New Yorkers would say to me, You’re so lucky you missed the cold! I comforted myself with reminders that winter was practically an entire year away. I knew that by the time it arrived, I’d be so entrenched, so in love with my life and this city, that suffering through would be the only option. I was right.

So despite the fact that perhaps I’d rather spend this particular season in the desert, I’m sticking it out. I’m settling in with a stack of books and counting down the days until spring, until I can say I’ve survived all four seasons, until I can tell other newcomers to the city how lucky they are to have missed the worst of it. I’ll remember the blooms, the sunshine, the leaves. And I’ll remind myself that next winter is practically a year away.

Christmastime in the city

I’m a city girl, through and through, and that’s never more true than at the holidays. My favorite Christmas memories as a little girl growing up in Cleveland are of going to Tower City to pick out gifts for family members. (No surprise that little Leigh Anne was also a shopaholic). In Dallas, I’d get a kick out of seeing the Christmas decorations in fancy nearby suburbs and at the Galleria. My favorite holiday song is Silver Bells: city sidewalks, busy sidewalks, dressed in holiday style…

New York City, of course, blows those previous experiences completely out of the water. This city is iconic for its holiday decorations. As someone who loves cities and loves Christmas: It’s basically heaven. Last week I took some time to wander the streets – Silver Bells blaring in my headphones, of course – and take it all in. Here are some of the highlights:

Despite the cold, I have to admit: This season in New York City is absolutely incredible.

My Week(s) in Instagrams: 12/13/14

Hi friends! It’s been a while since my last Instagram post – December is such a crazy busy month! I wanted to stop by and give you all a sample of what I’ve been up to. This isn’t every photo from the past two weeks (NYC is so photogenic!) so be sure to follow me here to see everything!

IMG_3043

I bought an ASU ornament to start to even the score a bit – my roommate is an Arizona grad (it’s her only flaw) and there are wayyyyy too many Arizona A’s on this tree!

IMG_3052

The upside to walking to Trader Joe’s in snow/rain/sleet is that the streets of Downtown Brooklyn are looking incredibly festive these days!

IMG_3057

Think Coffee has become my default break spot during workdays, now that it’s too cold to hang out on a park bench with a book. I love to settle in with a latte, a muffin and either a book or the latest episode of Serial!

IMG_3065

My dear friend Misha was in town last weekend and dragged me to a University of Arizona alumni event in midtown to watch the PAC-12 championships. I wore a blue shirt to avoid the ire of strangers – but you all know I was still supporting the ASU Sun Devils (who were not playing, for the record.)

After eight months of living in NYC, I finally made it to a museum! Becca, Misha and I headed to the Met on a rainy Saturday.

Sometimes you just need ice cream for dinner, am I right?

New York is just as magical and festive as everyone says it is this time of year – I’ve spent many hours just wandering the streets taking pictures. Stay tuned this week to see more!

That time I went to an SNL taping

I don’t have a bucket list, but if I did, go to a taping of Saturday Night Live would be right there at the top. It’s been my favorite show since the early-2000’s glory days of Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph and Rachel Dratch. I would slip out of bed at 11:25 and watch with the volume turned way down. (As it turns out, my parents totally knew, but as comedy fans themselves they let me think I was being rebellious for a couple years.) Even today, I watch my Women of SNL  and Best of Amy Poehler DVDs regularly.

When I moved to New York City in March, going to a taping was one of the top things I wanted to do. None of the hosts or musical guests in the spring were enticing enough for me to camp out overnight for a slim chance at a standby seat, so when the lottery opened up in August, my roommate Becca and I both entered with the agreement that if we won, we’d go together. If you’re picked, you’re given two tickets to either the dress rehearsal or the live taping of a random show – you can’t pick the date or the time. I’ve heard tales of people who enter every season for decades and never win – so I wasn’t expecting much my first year in New York.

I’m sure you know where this is going by now. Six weeks ago, I got that fateful email: Dear Leigh Anne, CONGRATULATIONS! In response to your request for tickets to Saturday Night Live… at this point I stopped reading and started freaking out. Complete with tears. AT WORK. I immediately texted Becca (save the date!) and my parents (GUESS WHAT?!) It felt like Christmas.

SNL email

Immediately we began speculating on who the host would be. I was hoping for an SNL alum, particularly Amy Poehler (my very favorite celebrity). Becca crossed her fingers for Matthew McConaughey. When the news broke, I actually heard from my friend Emmie (also a comedy fan): James Franco would be hosting with musical guest Nicki Minaj. I was excited for a couple reasons: James Franco had hosted twice before, so I knew he’d be good and know the ropes. Also, I hadn’t given any thought to the musical guest before – I’m not the biggest fan of pop music and usually don’t even know the guests on SNL. But I knew Nicki Minaj and knew I didn’t hate her!

When the day arrived, Becca and I got to 30 Rock around 9:30 p.m. – a huge benefit to having reservations! I picked up our tickets and, knowing we’d have to hand them over to an NBC page, immediately took a slew of selfies for Instagram, texting to my family, and general bragginess. Soon enough we were turning off our phones and settling into Studio 8H!

SNL tickets

I’m not going to talk about the entire show because I could easily write a couple thousand words on it, but you can watch it on Hulu. I will say that, before the show, if I could have made two wishes (which I never vocalized, for fear of jinxing it!), I would have wanted a surprise celebrity guest appearance and for Cecily Strong and Vanessa Bayer to do their ex-porn stars sketch (my very favorite recurring sketch!) We got both!

Though some may say Seth Rogen wasn’t exactly a “surprise” (he and James Franco seem to be attached at the hip), I was caught off guard and screamed like a little girl when he came out during the monologue! At the end of the show, when they were setting up the set for ex-porn stars, I freaked out again. These were the perfect bookends for my SNL experience!

After the show as Becca and I were walking outside to catch a cab, I held the door open for the girl behind me (because I like to think I’m a nice person) – and it turned out to be my favorite current cast member, Kate McKinnon! What a fun surprise, and what a way to wrap up a night I’d been dreaming of since middle school.

Special thanks and apology to my lovely friend Misha, who was visiting from Phoenix and whom we ditched to have this hopefully-not-but-probably-once-in-a-lifetime experience. Love you dearly!

My Week in Instagrams: 11/30/14

Can y’all believe it’s already advent?! My very favorite season kicks off TODAY! I’m so excited for a month of celebrating the birth of Jesus. It’s already off to an awesome start, with this week full of holiday celebrations.

IMG_2988

I’m usually the type to wait until after Thanksgiving to put up the tree, but my roommate and I both had last Monday off from work so we made a day of it: Saw Mockingjay Part 1, stocked up on Thanksgiving foods from Trader Joe’s, watched every Thanksgiving episode of Friends and put up our tree! What a wonderful day it was.

IMG_2995

Of course when we put up our tree I realized that I didn’t bring any of my ornaments with me in the move – and all of Becca’s are from her alma mater, which is my alma mater’s rival! So on Tuesday I started replenishing my Christmas stash with this ornament featuring the best letter in the alphabet.

IMG_3008

In many ways, Thanksgiving this year was just another Thursday for me, with fewer people in the office and more phone calls placed to family. But I was shocked when getting off the train in Manhattan to find New York City looking particularly charming – especially considering we’d just suffered the first slushy snowfall of the season. It made for a cold but beautiful walk to work.

IMG_3027

Friday was my college’s annual game against our aforementioned rival. It’s considered football’s most intense rivalry, so obviously I had to post some support for my Sun Devils! Tragically, we lost the game. I don’t want to talk about it – but I am forever proud of ASU!

IMG_3039

Finally, last night my sweet friend Chelsea – the very first person I met at Liberty Church back in the spring – hosted an impromptu Christmas party. Santa hats were involved and many photos were taken. Such joy I take from my friendships here in NYC!

Happy holidays, friends!
